The construction of Ipoh Shoe City is seen as a revolutionary and breakthrough infrastructure development in the century-old shoe-making industry in the state which is supported by state government, with the hope that upon completion, it will be able to help the operators to attain better results and enhancing the industry’s image and popularity of their brand.
The company tasked with the mission to construct Ipoh Shoe City is DS Group. According to the contract signed between the company and the Perak Footwear Industry Association, the first phase of Ipoh Shoe City is expected to be completed and operational by 2017.
The Bukit Mertajam, Penang-based company was established in 2009 with the core business of constructing small and medium-sized manufacturing plants. As of May 2015, DS Group has already completed the construction of 70 manufacturing plants in the state. All the plants are uniquely designed landmark properties for industrial use.
Goup managing director Datuk Tan Buck Lai says Ipoh Shoe City marks DS Group’s first real estate development project outside its home base of Bukit Mertajam. The project will be carried out with a four-in-one concept with comprehensive infrastructure to meet the needs of shoe-making industry operators. Ipoh Shoe City will have 126 light industry buildings, 18 double-storey retail shop lots, exquisite hotel plus one-storey retail floor at ground level and also a world-class landmark convention center.
Calling himself a newcomer to the industry, Tan has about six years of experience in the construction industry. Prior to this, he used to be engaged in fashion trading business which is largely identical to the shoe industry in nature. As a result, he is well aware of the requirements of the industry players, the amenities, dimensions and spaces for storage, packing and delivery. Because of this, he is able to construct Ipoh Shoe City to meet the required specifications.
When asked why DS Group has managed to clinch the contract of Ipoh Shoe City, Tan says, “This is because we are utterly sincere and reasonable in delivering our promises to the Association while meeting the aspirations and interest of the association and its members. We are putting ourselves in their shoes when implementing the project.”
He also says it is a feather in DS Group’s crown to be able to develop Ipoh Shoe City into a well known landmark property in Perak. The project will also mark an important corporate achievement to spearhead the group’s long-term development in future.
He says it is the company’s goal to progressively expand its business scope from its home state of Penang, and Ipoh marks a significant first step for such an endeavor.
